If you only read two other blogs this year; make it these two: VSmack's blog, and
Jerm's blog. Also check out Triple Minority, which surely will be a credit to us all.

The blog has been moved to right about here.

We're in the middle of the desert.

I picked up "Crown of Horns", the last in the excellent Bone series. Suffice it to say that I'm going to miss it.

Speaking of picking up, my books aren't in yet, although I should have been able to pick them up this evening. I seriously need them by Monday or Tuesday, or I'm going to be behind in my reading before the end of the first week. =O

Psych looks like it will be awesome. In addition to the interest I have in the material, our professor seems really enthusiastic, and his last name is Gentleman, which is astounding. Two other matters of interest in this course:

1) We can volunteer as guinea-pigs in psychological experiments in order to gain extra credit. This is exciting. We've been assured that it isn't anything freaky, but I think that they HAVE to say that, if only to avoid creating a bias in our mind and skewing the results (internal validity, thank you Stats). It'll be really cool if it is bizzare, but either way, I want free marks.

2) There is a component of our mark called RTCP wherein they evaluate our Reading, Thinking and Communication skills. Good, I''m glad that some course is going to include sometyhing like this, but wait, it gets better. They present us with two short essays, taking opposite sides on a debate. We are required to, online, compose an abstract of one essay, and then write a few paragraphs where we comment on, or take issue with an opinion or fact presented. How do 20 or so TAs and one professor mark, like, 700 assignments? They don't. We, the students, evaluate each other, and the TAs/ professor monitor the grading for fairness, distribution and deviation. The whole thing is actually the idea of a graduate student who is composing his masters on the results of online lectures and RTCP, and who will probably get a pretty good mark.

Oh yeah, I'm going to quit at NoFrills tomorrow. I just can't fit it in. I need a job closer to home/ campus and one with more flexible hours. The new Student Centre is hiring for all sorts of jobs, and I'm totally going to apply there. Plus, I'll be free from work altogether until late Oct./early Nov. so that'll be a pleasant change. I can hardly remember what it's like.

I'm really, really tired. I slept very little during Frosh week, obviously, and now, whoo. G'night. My eys are blurrt snd I can;t srr.

...and but for the sky there are no fences facing.

Whoa! Been a while since the last update. Well, here we go. If you are at all interested in my life, read this one; it's big, it's major, it was cool.

Camping was awesome. Without going into it too much, I wish we had spent both days up at Little Rock Lake, instead of waiting around in the main campground for those deadbeats. (In the unlikely event that one of you alleged "deadbeats" should read this, just kidding. Please don't hurt me.) It was a long and uncomfortable walk, especially with a pressure cooker hastily tied to my back, but it was totally worth it. The walk was beautiful, and allowed me to indulge my survivalist aspirations, identifying mushrooms and whatnot. A saw a Fly Agaric! They're really toxic! No Morels (tasty) or Liberty Caps (psychotropic) though.
But there were better things than mushrooms. Little Rock Lake was totally beautiful, and we had the whole lake to ourselves. The lakefront was actually Shield rock, and the floor of the camp clearing was moss and pine needles. Awesome. We ate well, and smoked well, (Alan and Rob and I anyways) and although the mentholated apple idea didn't work, it was all good. We had sparklers too, and running around on your own lake, in the dark, with sparklers, when you are high as zee kite must be experienced to be fathomed. Many great things. Many.

FROSH WEEK! Or FROSH THREE DAYS! to be more accuratre was also quite cool. I lost my voice. Major events include: making some new friends (Marlon and Vlad), meeting the oft mentioned Amanda (Patrick's/Alan's/etc.'s friend & my frosh leader say WHAAAT!?), getting screwed by the bus company, gaining popularity and fame as a member of the COOP GROOP, having my candidacy for SCSU office sponsored by a currently elected member (! Jeff !), and generally being a cool, cool guy (Xuan & Catherine, thank you very much). So, it was cool.

Now, today was my first day. Very light, easy day. Bio lecture at 11, break for lunch, Statistics in Psychology at 1, done by 3. I am positively going to rape Bio. Even the imposing B level (second year) Stats looks like I can do it with relative ease. But, you never know. I'm not worried, but I am going to work my ass off. Vlad nailed it, but I can't remember what he said, so I won't record it here. Just know that it was nailed.

I think I did well on my music audition for Wind Ensemble, or whatever it's called. More than anything, I hope it's a good band. Even though it's for credit, if the band is embarrassing, so help me, I swear I'm out. Thursdays 5-7. Woot. I'll find out soon whether or not I made it.

I stopped by Woburn today. Poor Alan. I'm here for you buddy. Thanks for the carabeener. Tomorrow, I'll trade you a box for my CDs. Fun Facts follow:

TOP LINES (CAMP): "On the way!"/ "Where'd you get that? A vending machine?"/ "Where's my 84 damn patties?!"
TOP LINES (FROSH): "Fuck! You brought a whole case?"/ "Mr. Miyagi" /"You should run for rep. You'll win."/ "You can go across the whole city for $2.25? Hong Kong sucks!"
MOST EATEN: (Goes to Flashback-mode Alan) Double-meat footlong sub, fries, Wendy's Triple, Frosty, like, 6 dipping sauces, most of my chips.
COOL PROFS: Stats (Dr. Bohr. Yup, that's his last name, though I don't think it's N-unit.)
NEW CONTACTS ADDED: FOUR.
WHERE THE HELL IS HE NOW: Ryu. Seriously, where are you?

DISCLAIMER: LINES MAY NOT BE FUNNY, UNLESS YOU WERE THERE.

Bank Holiday 2: The Accruing

The enigmatic bank holiday is being celebrated (do you actually celebrate this thing?) in the UK today- but not in Scotland. What the hell is with the Bank Holiday? Why do sections of the population, defined by geography, refuse to participate in it's observance, int Australia as well as the UK? Surely there are countless possibilities, but the actual answer, should there be one, undoubtedly will not be as amusing as hypothesizing about it, so unless it's a good story, I don't really want to know.

Outrage, patriotism, literature. (Camping too.)

I saw an advertisment, running during the closing ceremonies on CBC, for a beer that I think was called "Steel Head Red". This ad is one of the most caustic assaults on artistry, intelligence, and any dignity that we as Canadians may retain. This monstrosity featured some sort of Canadian "entertainer", presumably known to some, likely the feeble- minded and terminally loathsome, obviously constipated, and, as evidenced by the bulging veins in his neck, straining with a pathetic, pedestrian, and largely imagined emotion. The ogre in question was marshalling an assault in our national anthem which actually, without exaggeration, caused me to recoil in disgust. Compared to this, that atrocious pre-Moxy Fruvous one was the music of the Spheres itself. Interspersed with these scenes of horror, and badly interspersed due to the sub-moronic efforts of a clearly inept editing staff, were X-TREME!!!11! close-ups of the beer in question being poured. The whole ghastly affair was concluded by the guy who does the voice-overs for FOX's "When Minorities Attack" declaiming... "Steel Head Red; Proud supporter of the Argonauts and EVERYTHING CANADA STANDS FOR." There is nothing that needs to be said about that. Readers of this log are intelligent enough to discern for themselves the motives behind that claim, and the implications of it. That advertisement has not only guaranteed that I will never consume that swill, but has also guaranteed my enduring hatred for everything involved with it. Holy crap.

In any event, watching the Greecian closing ceremonies I was struck with a sense that, while their patriotic sentiments were clearly romanticized and exaggerated, at least they have cultural elements to romanticize. Poor Canada. Having not been old enough to observe previous Canadian attempts at hosting, I will be anxious to see the display our next Winter hosts put on, and I expect to be ashamed at the largely illusory elements of Canadian culture they attempt to incoporate. But, there is hope.

Additionally, the Salterton Trilogy has fallen before the blade of my formidible, and, to wit, rapier- like intellect. A good book, as Davies has consistantly proven to be, but not as engaging as Deptford. I have not yet gotten the Cornish Trilogy, but I am looking forward to reading it.

Finally, camping. Yay!

Hurricane, computer, technology.

Tropical storm Francis is brewing, and Hurricane Gaston is on the way. This is the lamest storm season ever.

My computer is slowly falling apart. I don't know what the problem is, but I have now confirmed that it is not the unremovable virus. It turns out that the file it's "finding" doesn't exist at all, and Norton probably needs to be wiped and uninstalled. Meanwhile, there are other problems.

I think your two e-mails might be causing t3h problems again though, VSmack. I've been on fairly regularly, but once again, I haven't seen you in a while. Additionally, I'm With Busey was on the subject of technology, and was very funny. That is all for now.

interim: Long overdue update

What can I say? I'm lazy. That and the Mbari Hogun thing has really hung me up for a while.

Anyways, Heapkings has recieved it long overdue update. The flatting process has been over hauled, posing new problems, and resolving old ones. I think this way looks better though.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Just for clarification: Knowledge of this FACT will not allow you unfiltered perception, or grant you revelations ineffable and arcane. It will simply visit upon you the realization that there is purpose and direction in the unvierse. This is the balm to soothe your angsty, existential worries.
Does this suggest that there are absolute, correct answers to other, seemingly subjective, questions?
Almost certainly, yes. Go and discover them for yourselves, insulting and physically attacking detractors when necessary. For Science! For Truth!
Back where I can read the signs.
[Edit: My grammar is exceptionally poor in this one, I know. I'm also missing pronouns. Whatever.]
Whew. That's a long drive. Anyways, had a really good time in Quebec. There was the fun of revisiting places we went in grade 7, and of finding out where my memories diverged from reality. In general, I remembered quite well, but the locations of certain things were badly skewed. Additionally, had a good night out with a group of people staying on the seventh floor of our hotel. That was cool, but I've no clue how some of these people knew eachother. This one guy didn't speak either French or English fluently, and his name was Orving or something weird like that. Anyways, good times. Had to get the museum aspect into the trip too, if only to fulfill rather hamfisted estimates, and therefore, went to the "Museum of Civilization", which is a misnomer. Unlike it's Ottawa counterpart, this is actually a museum of the Humanities, or of Sociology, displaying predominately temporary, multimedia exhibits, often culled from commissions on the subject. Ranging from innocuous museum material such as Gaul v. Rome and Memory, to the pretensious and ineffable Sand and Blue, I found it to be very original and interesting, and would certainly appreciate one here, where I can read more of the signs.
Speaking of that, I think my French has improved somewhat, at least in reading. There was little call to converse in French, and therefore, I remain as functionally illiterate as ever.
Additionally, and on a tragic note, my misfortune with digital memory continues. FFVII, FF Legend II, Matt's FFX, and now, Mario & Luigi Superstars have fallen victim to the curse. In this case, the power supply to the AC adaptor was briefly terminated while saving, and the 14 hour file (Bowser's castle) was erased outright. I might just trade in the game. I enjoyed it, but that's a major piss-off.
As a final note, I nearly finished the Salterton trilogy, and we dropped off my MD player at Sony on the way in to be repaired. Hopefully now I will be ready.
Me au Quebuc
So, off to Quebec tomorrow, until Friday. I will leave you with a song.
      Ash Hash. The song VSmack was talking about that Moxy Fruvous did on Just for Hacks. They didn't write it, but comandeered it, vessel like, from Bob Snider. I'm going from memory here, so gimme a break if I'm not exact.
If all this ash used to be hash, what the heck time is it now?
Last thing I remember I was looking at my stash just before the late late show,
then we threw a couple movies in the VCR, and I remember driving buddy home in my car,
well, we got no gas so we couldn't have gone far.
What the heck time is it now.
*Howling, crazy noises*
First thing in the morning, I'm giving myself a break.
You've got to get an early warning when your fingernails and eyelids ache.
Well, it might be closer to the afternoon, but the big point is I'm going to do it soon,
there ain't nothing underneath this moon will ever make me toke another take.
But what's that on the table? Why it looks like a little chunk.
I bet old Petey dropped that there, he always was a drunk.
Well, it looks so good just sitting there that I believe what I need is a bite of the hair.
The doggone stuff is like a breath of fresh air, I think I'm going to sell the farm.
I think I'm going to sell the farm.
And on the way out, here's that questionaire. Go ahead an comment; I'll read 'em when I get back. OUT.
1. Who are you?
2. Are we friends?
3. When and how did we meet?
4. Do you have a crush on me?
5. Would you kiss me?
6. Describe me in one word.
7. What was your first impression?
8. Do you still think that way about me now?
9. What is the best thing I've ever done for you?
10. The worst?
11. If you could give me anything what would it be?
12. How well do you know me?
13. When's the last time you saw me?
14. Ever wanted to tell me something but couldn't?
15. Are you going to put this on your blog and see what I say about you?
